Is this right for me?
Every question we get asked, answered.
Including the ones people feel awkward asking out loud. If yours is not here, bring it to the meet-and-greet.
The basics
What is Direct Primary Care?
Direct Primary Care is healthcare stripped of the clutter. It is comprehensive primary care delivered directly to you—without the insurance company standing in the middle. You pay a flat monthly fee directly to your provider, and in exchange you get unhurried visits, direct access, and same-day or next-day appointments, with no copays, no deductibles, and no surprise bills arriving months later.
By removing the middleman, the model provides complete price transparency and delivers essential services at a lower cost, completely independent of traditional insurance reimbursement.
How does the membership model work?
A flat monthly fee delivers complete primary care with total price transparency. Enjoy healthcare free from hidden fees, insurance paperwork, and surprise bills in the mail.
Think of it like a gym membership or a streaming service, but for your health. One predictable price, cancel any time.
What is included in my monthly membership?
Your membership covers your standard primary and preventive care needs. That includes unhurried appointments that last 30 to 60 minutes or longer if needed; direct access to call, message, or video-visit your care team; same-day or next-day visits when you are sick or need acute care; and proactive wellness planning built on lifestyle, nutrition, and mental well-being.
It also includes in-house blood draws and specimen collection, complimentary segmental body composition analysis, and simple office procedures.
Is this the same as concierge medicine?
No. Both charge a periodic membership fee, but a concierge practice also bills your insurance for each service rendered, which brings back the copays and coinsurance costs you were trying to escape.
Direct primary care keeps costs predictable and affordable by avoiding insurance entirely. Everything in your membership is included in the fee you already know about.
What if I'm healthy and rarely need care? Is a membership worth it?
Yes. Direct primary care is not only there when you are sick. Preventive and proactive care, lifestyle guidance, and health education are all part of your membership.
Your membership covers both long-term wellness and sudden illness. We are redefining healthcare to ensure personalized prevention is the starting point, not the afterthought. For a healthy person, value means proactive care—catching issues early and anchoring your future on a solid health foundation. Traditional medicine operates on a reactive model, stepping in only after something goes wrong. We completely flip that equation to focus entirely on keeping you well.
Who is part of the clinical team?
Alongside your provider, our clinical team includes Sydney Harris, a certified phlebotomy technician and medical assistant trainee who works under your provider’s supervision.
This structure ensures prompt answers to your questions and efficient handling of your administrative needs. Most importantly, it protects your provider’s time, keeping the focus entirely on your clinical care.
Insurance & Medicare
Do I still need health insurance?
Yes. Direct primary care is not insurance. It is a highly personalized way of delivering healthcare.
We strongly recommend that members maintain a high-deductible insurance plan, a health savings account, or a health share plan to protect against major, unexpected medical events such as catastrophic emergencies, major surgery, or specialized hospital care.
Do you take health insurance?
No. We have made a conscious decision not to accept or participate in any insurance products or programs, and the practice will not bill any insurance company for your care.
Your direct healthcare agreement is not health insurance. It is not a substitute for health insurance or other health plan coverage, and it does not provide the minimum essential coverage that may be required of you under federal law.
How do my membership fees interact with my insurance?
Because we do not participate in any insurance networks, we do not bill insurance companies for your visits.
Your membership fee covers everything we do inside our clinic walls. You can still use your traditional health insurance outside our clinic for standard healthcare expenses: preventative screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies, specialist referrals and physical therapy, advanced diagnostics such as MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasounds, and prescriptions filled at your local retail pharmacies.
Think of your membership as complete coverage for your everyday care, while your insurance remains a safety net for outside services, specialists, and catastrophic events.
Do you take Medicare patients?
Yes, we are open to Medicare patients. The practice and provider have formally opted out of the Medicare program.
What that means for you: you must enter into a private contract for medical services, and by doing so you agree that neither you nor your legal representative will submit a claim to Medicare for any services we provide. Federal law requires this separate documentation to be signed by every Medicare-eligible member before services are rendered.
What if I am uninsured?
You can still join. While we strongly encourage members to carry a high-deductible or catastrophic plan, it is not a requirement to be seen here.
We believe in health equality, which means reimagining healthcare access by making the highest standard of personalized care the baseline for everyone, regardless of insurance coverage or socioeconomic status.
Access & appointments
What are your hours?
We provide clinical services Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, closed for lunch from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. We are closed Wednesdays.
We prefer visits scheduled more than 24 hours in advance where possible. Same-day and next-day appointments are available but limited, and we do not see walk-ins.
While we use several communication platforms for your convenience, availability outside business hours is not guaranteed. Anything received after hours is addressed on the next clinic day.
Can I be seen for urgent needs?
For life-threatening emergencies, always call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Because we intentionally limit our patient panel size, we strive to offer a level of access that traditional clinics simply cannot match. Whether you are dealing with a sudden illness, a minor injury, a seasonal flare-up, or a routine health concern, we will attempt to accommodate acute needs with a same-day or next-day appointment whenever possible. Our goal is to be your first line of defense, helping you avoid unnecessary, expensive, and stressful trips to a crowded urgent care facility.
How long are appointments?
Standard office visits are scheduled for 30 to 60 minutes so there is time for real shared decision-making. Complex visits or procedures may run longer at the provider’s clinical discretion.
How do I communicate with my care team?
Spruce Health is our exclusive, all-in-one communication platform. We use a secure, encrypted patient portal for all medical messaging, photo sharing, and clinical updates.
Standard SMS and standard email are not fully secure or HIPAA-compliant, so we ask that all members use our authorized secure app for clinical matters to keep their records private.
Money
What does it cost?
Membership is age-tiered: $50 a month for children ages 3–17, $100 a month for ages 18–30, $125 a month for ages 31–49, and $150 a month for ages 50 and over. A family membership covering two adults and two children under 18 is $300 a month. Up to two additional children can be added at $25 a month each; beyond that, each child is billed at the standard $50 a month child rate.
There is a one-time enrollment fee of $100. That is the entire price list. No copays, no per-visit charges, nothing annual on top.
What payment methods do you accept?
All payments are managed through Hint Health. We accept credit and debit cards and ACH bank transfers.
Federal legislation effective January 1, 2026, permits individuals with high-deductible health plans to utilize Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to pay for Direct Primary Care membership fees. It remains your responsibility to consult a qualified tax professional or CPA to determine whether membership fees qualify as a "qualified medical expense" under your specific plan.
How does lab pricing work?
Enjoy the convenience of on-site blood draws and specimen collection with zero added labor fees. Your membership unlocks our direct pass-through pricing for routine lab work. We pass these exceptional volume savings straight to our members.
Certain specialized labs, pathology, or non-routine tests may carry an extra charge. We value transparency, so you will always know the exact number before anything is run. You will never learn a lab price from a bill.
How we practice
How is this different from a traditional doctor’s office?
Traditional healthcare is built on a fee-for-service system that rewards speed and symptom-chasing. The more patients you see, the more money you make. That is the core flaw of the system, and it is the exact opposite of how we run this practice.
We reject the hurried, conveyor-belt approach. We provide the focused time and attention you deserve to protect your long-term wellness rather than just treat disease. Personalized prevention is the starting point here, not the afterthought.
In traditional clinics, the more patients a doctor sees the more they earn. Is that true here?
No, and that is the point of this model. Insurance-driven practices must carry 2,000 to 3,000 patients just to stay afloat, which forces a rushed, conveyor-belt approach.
A membership structure lets us strictly limit our panel to a fraction of that size. It aligns our incentives with yours: we focus on the quality of your care and your long-term outcomes, not the volume of patients moving through the doors.
What does "shared decision-making" actually mean here?
In many clinics, medicine is a one-way conversation, and you receive instructions during a hurried appointment. Here it means we sit on the same side of the table.
We combine our medical expertise with your unique insights, values, and goals. We lay out the options transparently—discussing the benefits, risks, and evidence—and then we co-create a personalized plan together. You are always an active, informed, and empowered partner in your care.
What do you mean by "health is a journey, not a destination"?
We believe health doesn’t have a final finish line or a single endpoint where you can simply stop trying. Your body and your life continuously change as you age, and achieving true, lifelong vitality requires an ongoing process of adaptation.
We aren’t here to give you a temporary, surface-level "patch." We are here to help you build a lifestyle that supports your body through every stage of your life.
What if I have a setback?
Setbacks, stress, and injuries are a natural part of the journey. A "destination" mindset treats a setback as failure, whereas the "journey" mindset treats it as an opportunity to pause, listen to your body, and adapt.
We practice with immense compassion. When setbacks happen, we don’t judge—we collaborate. We look at what is working, what isn’t, and adjust our strategy together.
What is "patient-first" or "quality-driven" care?
It means putting your health, goals, and quality of life at the center of every decision.
Instead of focusing on how many patients we see or procedures we perform, we focus on helping you achieve better long-term health outcomes. We look beyond immediate symptoms to understand the bigger picture of your health and provide care that is personalized, transparent, and aligned with your needs. When you succeed, we succeed.
Policies
What if the practice is not a good fit?
That is all right. You may end your membership at any time. Either party may terminate with at least 30 days’ written notice.
That freedom is a feature of this model. Direct payment liberates the provider–patient relationship from insurance network restrictions, so you can choose a provider based on trust, expertise, and compatibility rather than an insurance directory.
Do you have a late policy?
Life is unpredictable and delays happen. We approach late arrivals with that in mind, and every interaction with a late member should be rooted in empathy.
That said, your time and every other member’s time is valuable. A member more than seven minutes late is considered a late arrival and will be asked to reschedule so we stay on time for everyone else. Certain exceptions may apply.
Do you prescribe controlled substances?
We maintain a strict policy on controlled substances, including opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants. Membership does not guarantee that controlled substances will be prescribed.
We do not prescribe chronic, long-term controlled substances. Chronic pain management is referred to a specialized pain provider. The practice strictly follows Alaska PDMP guidelines for all controlled substance prescriptions.
Can anyone come in for a blood draw?
No. Blood draw and specimen collection services are available exclusively to active members, by appointment. We do not accept walk-in lab orders from outside providers or the general public.
